Organic Thoughts: KUNG FU MANTIS

Master Mantis is Our Kung Fu Hero in the Organic Community
Unlike the Ladybug
Master Mantis doesn't look very friendly and accommodating
this serves as his defense over you coming too near
to stop you on your tracks
and subdue your inclination of squashing him with your foot
or the least,
throwing a stone at him
Having earned his place in the world of Bushido
or Martial Arts... particularly Kung Fu
His Fighting Style and form are of speed and continuous attacks.
It may be so
but You are not his fight nor his engagement

His war is to help Organic Farmers
control and eradicate
the "bad guys" such as the Aphids and other insects
that harm our land and produces
with the help of the other heroes
Chemical sprays are kept out as an option

here's a few more things to tell your children,
your date
or your significant other about Master Mantis..
  • Brown or green, they camouflage so well they are almost difficult to spot
  • they are silent and patient and still in their stalking
  • they can turn their heads 180 degrees to scan their surroundings
  • and have excellent eyesight for a fact. seeing movement up to 60 feet away

It may take awhile to sum up the courage to come close
much more scoop him in your hands
but you can and may
but gently and calmly please

I've always thought the praying mantis was a really cool looking creature. And I got a kick out of your comparison of the mantis to a Kung Fu artist.

Anamari,

I love the analogy and am a fan of the praying mantis as well. Anything that help organic food is a friend of mine :)

Hi,
I think we like grasshoppers because we anthropomorphize them into wise old humans, just a thought…

Hi , Anamari
I have always liked the way preying mantis look. I can remember the first time I saw one very cool looking. I had always heard it was illegal to kill them? Have you ever heard that?

I loved the comparison!

I'm sure that it takes a lot of anxiety out of the Organic Farmers life knowing he such a reliable and helpful ally out there battling 'da bugs.

Ana-mari,

I love your posts! When I was in the 3rd grade, my teacher brought a praying mantis to our class. She kept it in an aquarium. Some time after she began keeping this class pet in our classroom, the insect had babies. From what I remember, there were hundreds of tiny praying mantis insects in the aquarium. It was great. The praying mantis has been one of my favorite insects since then.

By the way, that is a very nice picture of you.
